In times of economic slowdown, funding for Spanish and Bilingual programs  dries up. Then, schools and colleges must use creative methods to fund these crucial programs.

And, with economic woes, school systems and colleges start laying off many of their newest, brightest, and best teachers, in favor of retaining teachers with senoriity.

Of course, pinching pennies now means long term loss for our society since workers who lack Spanish and Bilingual skills earn less, pay less taxes and purchase less expensive homes. Without adequate Spanish and Bilingual skills, everyone who works in the Bilingual marketplace is at a disadvantage.

In a time of economic downturn, fund Spanish and Bilngual projects as much as possible because non-Spanish speakers compete directly in our job market.
